In 2023, WORC, a prominent Mexican architectural firm led by Ricardo Martínez and Camila Ureña, introduced CHINGU Restaurant to the vibrant Condesa neighborhood of Mexico City. Inspired by the bustling street food scene of Seoul, this establishment aims to transport diners to the heart of Korean culinary culture while celebrating the eclectic charm of Mexico City.

Concept and Design

CHINGU Restaurant serves as a culinary stage where friends gather to share authentic Seoul flavors amidst the lively ambiance of Mexico City. Upon entry, guests are greeted by a vibrant red neon sign proclaiming “KDMX AUTHENTIC STREET FOOD,” setting the tone for an immersive dining experience. The space features a cozy lobby, communal long tables, a central kitchen island, and restroom facilities, all meticulously crafted to evoke the bustling energy of Seoul’s street food scene.

Harmonizing Contexts: Mexican and Contemporary Seoul

A central challenge of the project was harmonizing the rich cultural tapestry of Mexico with the contemporary aesthetics of Seoul. The selection of materials played a pivotal role in achieving this synthesis. Neutral tones create a backdrop of modernity, while vibrant colors and textures infuse the space with warmth and character. Stainless steel, renowned for its practicality and durability, dominates the kitchen area, extending seamlessly to diners’ furniture, where it harmonizes with accents of pine wood to create chairs, benches, bars, and tables.

Crafting Atmosphere: Lighting and Spatial Elements

Polished concrete floors and white tiled surfaces contribute to the creation of subtly reflective surfaces, enhancing the play of light and fostering an intimate dining atmosphere. Vertical enclosures comprising railings, glass doors, and translucent partitions maximize spatial continuity while creating an illusion of spaciousness. The terrace seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor elements, featuring planters, hanging pots, and a distinctive wooden pergola adorned with steel elements and red-hued lamps, reminiscent of the neon signs that adorn the interior.

In essence, CHINGU Restaurant represents a harmonious fusion of cultures, where the vibrant spirit of Seoul’s street food scene converges with the dynamic cultural landscape of Mexico City, inviting diners on a sensory journey that transcends geographical boundaries.
