A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity: Casa Relámpago Bar in Mexico
In 2023, Estudio Tecalli, led by architect Roberto Martinez Valderrrama, unveiled the captivating “Casa Relámpago” Bar in San Pedro Cholula, Mexico. Nestled near the iconic Great Pyramid of Cholula, this bar harmonizes with the rich historical and urban landscape of the ancient city.
Embracing Heritage and Location
Situated at the outset of a bustling commercial and tourist district surrounding the Great Pyramid, Casa Relámpago occupies a strategic corner lot amidst a vibrant milieu of restaurants and bars. With a backdrop of the renowned “Los Remedios” catholic church, the bar enjoys panoramic views that define the surrounding valley.
Design Principles: Tradition Meets Innovation
Three fundamental design principles guided the creation of Casa Relámpago:
Base Material: Red bricks indigenous to the region form the foundational material, seamlessly integrating the interior and exterior spaces.
Vaulted Structure: A striking vault spans across the project, accentuating both single and double-height areas.
Distinctive Decor: Decorative elements, including polished concrete floors edged with golden aluminum profiles, concrete slabs interspersed with natural wood furniture, lend a unique aesthetic charm to the space.
Overcoming Geometric Challenges
The architectural endeavor encountered a geometric challenge in juxtaposing a rectangular base with a sweeping vault that frames vistas of the pyramid. Innovative design solutions, such as inverted slopes in windows and access doors, regulate sunlight penetration based on seasonal variations while showcasing the craftsmanship of local artisans.
A Marriage of Modernity and Tradition
Black checkered ironwork adorns the windows, while oak wood embellishes the staircase and main bar, infusing the space with warmth and elegance. Casa Relámpago epitomizes the seamless fusion of contemporary design sensibilities with the rich architectural heritage of the Puebla Valley and Mexico at large.
In essence, Casa Relámpago Bar serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Mexican architectural craftsmanship, celebrating the harmonious coexistence of past and present within the vibrant tapestry of San Pedro Cholula’s urban landscape.
