A Study in Spatial Optimization: Cœur Tagesbar in Munich
In 2023, Martino Hutz Architecture unveiled Cœur Tagesbar in Munich, Germany, a testament to innovative design principles in a confined space. Lead architect Martino Hutz employed a concept inspired by biological phenomena to maximize the potential of the 62 m² area.
Concept: Differential Growth as a Design Paradigm
At the heart of Cœur Tagesbar’s design lies the concept of differential growth, derived from a simple yet ambitious brief from the clients. This principle, akin to biological cell division, optimizes the use of limited space through a specialized growth pattern. Utilizing parametric software, an algorithm modeled after natural growth phenomena dictated the spatial evolution, resulting in a visually dynamic yet mathematically precise interior.
Architecture: Spatial Division and Chromatic Expression
The ground floor of Cœur Tagesbar is strategically divided into three zones: a covered outdoor terrace, a dining area along the façade, and a sociable open bar. Spatial separation between zones, especially due to limited daylight towards the rear, is achieved through innovative design interventions. Chromated steel panels, with their gradient colors, not only serve as wall cladding but also transform the interior into a kaleidoscope of hues, enhancing spatial experiences.
Visual Expansion and Illusory Spaces
To combat the constraints of a compact footprint, mirrored surfaces and artifacts are strategically placed to visually expand the space. Mirroring creates a play of angles, reflections, and counter-reflections, offering guests an ever-changing visual landscape. The centerpiece of the design, a hemispherical light installation above the bar, further enhances the illusion of space. Fabricated using a 28-meter-long specially cut fabric, the installation, surrounded by chromate steel panels, creates a seamless illusion of double-height space.
Seamless Integration and Dynamic Atmosphere
The longitudinal placement of the counter blurs the boundary between guests and staff, fostering interaction and engagement. Custom-made pendant lights, echoing the design language of the light installation, further enhance the spatial continuity. The ambiance of Cœur Tagesbar transitions effortlessly from a welcoming daytime retreat to an intimate and mysterious evening enclave, influenced by the dynamic interplay of light, color, and form.
In essence, Cœur Tagesbar stands as a testament to Martino Hutz Architecture’s mastery in spatial optimization, transforming a small, complex space into a vibrant and visually captivating destination in the heart of Munich.
