Blurring Boundaries: The Fusion of Coffee Shop and Library in Haikou

In 2021, Haikou City embarked on a cultural revitalization journey with its “Pavilions by the Sea” initiative, aiming to enrich the lives of its citizens with vibrant public spaces. Among these, “Mountain of the Sky” stands out as a striking urban landmark at Haikou Bay’s northern edge. Crafted by Sou Fujimoto Architects, its distinctive undulating roof serves as the canvas for a unique cultural endeavor – the JUANZONG Books & Cafe.

Conceptualizing the Experience: A Blend of Interior and Exterior

At JUANZONG Books & Cafe, we aimed to transcend traditional commercial settings, offering visitors an immersive experience that blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. Our design, nestled under the expansive roof of “Mountain of the Sky,” seeks to integrate the surrounding waterscape, gardens, and the vibrant hues of Haikou Bay seamlessly into the reading and relaxation experience.

Floating Amidst Nature: A Playful Oasis

Our vision was to create an environment where visitors feel as if they’re floating amidst nature’s wonders, with books, people, and decor intertwining like schools of fish. Through strategic use of colors, lighting, and modular furniture, we aimed to evoke a sense of playful serenity, encouraging visitors to lose themselves in the moment and forget their worries.

Seamlessly Integrated Design: Maximizing Space and Light

To preserve the breathtaking panoramic views and adapt to the building’s unique undulations, we opted for a minimalist approach, eschewing additional walls. Instead, we curated double-sided modular furniture, optimized lighting systems, and varied display heights to accommodate both adults and children seamlessly.

Inspired by the Sea: Fluid Dynamics in Design

Drawing inspiration from marine life, our design features fluid forms reminiscent of coral reefs and schools of fish. The spiral-shaped coffee bar, dynamic seating arrangements, and circular lighting tracks echo the graceful movements of underwater ecosystems, creating a harmonious spatial experience.

Guiding Interaction: Redefining Spatial Dynamics

At JUANZONG Books & Cafe, every element serves a purpose beyond mere functionality. Through thoughtful arrangement and design, we guide visitors’ movements and interactions, fostering a deeper understanding of the space and its surroundings. Our goal is to redefine the relationship between people and space, transcending traditional design methodologies.

In essence, JUANZONG Books & Cafe embodies a fusion of art, nature, and community, offering a sanctuary where visitors can immerse themselves in literature and tranquility amidst the bustling cityscape of Haikou.
