Nestled within a compact 350 ft² space, Anagram Coffee, designed by Tristan & Ju architects, redefines the artistry of specialty coffee in Singapore. Led by architects Tristan Tan and Juliana Chan, in collaboration with Flex Connect Pte Ltd as the main contractor, this cozy coffee shop presents the making of coffee as a theatrical performance, blending craftsmanship with intimacy.

Theatrical Design Approach

At the heart of Anagram Coffee lies the concept of presenting coffee-making as an art form. The main counter, strategically positioned in the center of the space, serves as the stage for baristas to showcase their skills. With its irregular design and raised platforms acting as a bar and point of sale, the counter fosters interaction between baristas and customers, transforming spectators into active participants in the coffee-making process.

Spatial Solutions for Compactness

To counter the constraints of a compact space, innovative design solutions were implemented. An artificial skylight mimics natural daylight, creating an inviting atmosphere upon entry. A suspended U-shaped ceiling frames the central action area while concealing mechanical ducting. Meanwhile, a unique seating arrangement—a narrow built-in bench along one wall paired with asymmetrical working counters on the other—maximizes space efficiency while maintaining a sense of balance.

Fusion of Functionality and Aesthetics

Secondary storage elements are seamlessly integrated into the space, doubling as design features. Rustic window frames inserted into plain surfaces add a playful touch, backlit to pique curiosity. A neutral palette with accents of rust brown complements the coffee-inspired theme, while varied textures create visual interest and depth. Plastering techniques mimic granite and travertine, evoking a sense of tranquility within the cozy confines of the coffee shop.
