Embracing Local Identity: The Erlebnis-Hus in St. Peter-Ording

Situated in Sankt Peter-Ording, Germany, the new Erlebnis-Hus stands as a testament to inclusive design, deeply intertwined with the local landscape and culture. Designed by Holzer Kobler, this visitor center serves as a vibrant meeting point for individuals of all ages and backgrounds, encapsulating a strong regional identity while fostering community engagement.

A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Inspired by local pile construction methods, the Erlebnis-Hus features an exposed load-bearing structure crafted from laminated timber. Within this framework, five oversized solid wood cubes are strategically positioned, each serving a distinct purpose. This innovative approach not only ensures sustainability and ecological integrity but also contributes to the site’s allure as a tourism hotspot.

Purposeful Design: Functional Cubes

The individual cubes within the structure house various amenities, including an analog game venue, an information center and shop, a restaurant, a staff office, and sanitary facilities. Enclosed with suspended wooden facades on three sides, these cubes offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape through oversized windows, fostering a deep connection with the sea, biotope, and promenade.

Accessible and Interactive Spaces

The Erlebnis-Hus is designed to be accessible and engaging on multiple levels, both indoors and outdoors. A network of terraces and stairs provides seamless connectivity, while a reinforced concrete core ensures structural stability. Play equipment integrated into the wooden sculpture encourages visitors to interact with the building, fostering a sense of playfulness and exploration.

Engaging with the Landscape

Nestled amidst the expanded beach promenade, the Erlebnis-Hus seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the beauty of the landscape, with opportunities to play in, on, under, beside, and around the building. This holistic approach to design encourages community engagement and enhances the overall visitor experience.

The Erlebnis-Hus in St. Peter-Ording stands as a shining example of architecture that transcends mere functionality, embracing the spirit of inclusivity, sustainability, and cultural heritage. As a beacon of local identity and community connectivity, it serves as a symbol of pride for residents and a welcoming gateway for visitors from near and far.
