Green House Floriade: A Horticultural Icon

The Green House stands as a monumental exhibition greenhouse at the Floriade 2022 in Almere, symbolizing the innovation and sustainability of the horticultural sector. Designed by V8 Architects, this structure showcases the transformative potential of standard greenhouse elements, reimagined to elevate the visitor experience and highlight the importance of horticulture on a global scale.

Scale and Silhouette

At the heart of the Floriade, the Green House commands attention with its distinctive raised central axis, spanning an impressive length of 170 meters. This elevated strip serves not only as a structural feature but also as a promenade, offering visitors a breathtaking panorama of the exhibition floors below. The greenhouse’s grand scale and unique silhouette make it an iconic centerpiece of the World Horticulture Exhibition.

Innovative Construction

Constructed entirely from reusable standard elements of the Venlo greenhouse type, the Green House embodies principles of sustainability and resource efficiency. The use of diverse materials, including transparent, translucent, textured, and whitewashed glass, creates a captivating interplay of light and shadow within the exhibition space, enhancing the immersive experience for visitors.

Horticultural Showcase

Along the promenade, visitors encounter various exhibition zones showcasing the diversity and innovation of Dutch horticulture. From traditional cultivation techniques to cutting-edge technologies, the Green House offers a comprehensive overview of the sector’s advancements. At the end of the route, a greenhouse restaurant awaits, providing a culinary experience amidst the lush greenery.

Integration with Landscape

The Green House seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings, adapting to the substantial difference in height along the highway. Four large terraces, corresponding to the varying elevation levels, serve as natural zones for different exhibitions. Prefabricated reusable pavement, partially left open, allows for the inclusion of flowers, plants, and trees directly into the ground, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.

As a temporary yet impactful structure, the Green House Floriade transcends its functional purpose, serving as a symbol of sustainability, innovation, and the enduring legacy of horticulture in the Netherlands and beyond.
