Hair Room TOARU: A Natural Architecture

Situated along a local roadside in Hanno, Japan, Hair Room TOARU defies convention as a hair salon integrated seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Designed by Ateliers Takahito Sekiguchi, this establishment reflects a commitment to sustainability, local resources, and innovative architectural solutions.

Contextual Background

Surrounded by a landscape dominated by forests and thriving forestry activities, Hair Room TOARU emerges as a beacon of modern design amidst traditional timber-centric architecture. Despite the prevalence of wooden structures in the area, the transition to non-residential, low-rise buildings has been slow, prompting a need for innovative architectural interventions.

Design Philosophy

The design brief emphasized the importance of creating bright, well-ventilated spaces capable of combating viruses, all while adhering to principles of sustainability. Rather than focusing solely on form, the architects embarked on a journey to reimagine the relationship between the hair salon, the local townscape, and the broader environment.

Architectural Elements

Hair Room TOARU features a series of cut spaces delineated by large mirrors (RC walls) arranged in a staggered manner. These spaces are interconnected by large wooden desks (CLT roofs), employing a simple construction method reminiscent of furniture assembly. The strategic use of materials ensures fire protection, environmental performance, and aesthetic appeal, with indirect lighting and natural ventilation enhancing the ambiance.

Integration with Nature

The architecture of Hair Room TOARU blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, with plantings accentuated by reflective surfaces. By incorporating reflections of the surrounding landscape, including passing cars, the building serves as a canvas that juxtaposes elements of the past and present. This integration of natural and man-made elements creates a multilayered environment that transcends traditional notions of architecture.

Hair Room TOARU stands as a testament to the power of architectural innovation to harmonize with nature while meeting the evolving needs of modern society. Through thoughtful design and a holistic approach to sustainability, it embodies a new paradigm in hospitality architecture and wellness interiors.
