Located in Jiaochangwei, the only village along the Dapeng Peninsula’s coastline in Shenzhen, the Shenzhen Reef Library stands as a beacon of tranquility amidst the bustling tourism industry. Despite the aggressive expansion of tourism, the village retains its charm, offering respite from the overcrowded and noisy cityscape.

Creating a Diverse Public Space

The Shenzhen Reef Library project aims to transform a tightly enclosed site into a diverse and complex public space. Situated on the edge of a busy old street, the building is enveloped by neighboring houses, prompting the architects to devise innovative solutions to maximize space utilization.

Designing with Purpose

Divided by a nine-square grid, the building features contracted corners that decrease its volume while maintaining a sense of openness. Courtyards with distinct characteristics are strategically inserted into these void spaces, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor environments. Through a series of retreating actions, the spatial relationship inside the building gradually unfolds, offering visitors a journey of discovery.

Drawing Inspiration from Nature

Inspired by the red reefs left by ancient volcanic relics, the Shenzhen Reef Library incorporates this unique geological feature into its design. Red walls reminiscent of volcanic rock form the solid body of the building, creating a striking contrast with the white book tower. Curved openings and undulating curves echo the surrounding mountains and sea, establishing a harmonious connection between architecture and nature.

Redefining Community Space

Beyond serving as a library, the Shenzhen Reef Library redefines the significance of community space within the village. By fostering interaction between locals and visitors, the building contributes to the renewal of the local area, promoting a comprehensive and peaceful environment for all to enjoy. With its thoughtful design and integration into the surrounding landscape, the Shenzhen Reef Library embodies the spirit of community and connectivity.
