Designed by Javi Diaz, the Bandido Bali complex in Kecamatan Kuta Selatan, Indonesia, unveils a transformative approach to hospitality architecture. Comprising two houses within the complex, the project embodies a fusion of tradition, culture, and contemporary design, offering guests a unique and immersive experience inspired by the soul of Bali.

Embracing Nature and Culture

The architectural vision behind Bandido Bali was to transcend conventional design norms and establish a profound connection with nature and local culture. Diaz aimed to create a space where tradition seamlessly blends with contemporary elements, where indoor and outdoor environments merge, and where guests can immerse themselves in the beauty of Bali’s landscapes.

Spatial Organization and Philosophy

Situated on the picturesque Pecatu Peninsula, the layout of the houses draws inspiration from traditional Balinese housing. Central daytime areas foster social interactions, surrounded by private modules for nighttime activities. Emphasizing fluid circulation and multiple access points, the design encourages diverse interactions and experiences throughout the day. Extensive landscaping integrates seamlessly with the architecture, offering privacy and enhancing the overall sensory experience.

Human-Centric Design Process

Diaz’s design process prioritized human interaction and collaboration with local artisans over reliance on computer software. Models and sketches served as effective tools for communication, fostering dialogue and learning throughout the construction process. By infusing Mediterranean-inspired elements with local identity, Diaz ensured that the homes harmonized with their natural surroundings, optimizing airflow and natural light to promote comfort without artificial cooling.

Sustainable and Innovative Construction

Bandido Bali showcases a harmonious blend of bamboo and cement, symbolizing sustainability, tradition, and craftsmanship. The circular floor plan structure, comprising 24 pillars and a unique roof design, reflects meticulous attention to detail. Recycled materials sourced locally, including plastics, marble waste, and PET bottle fabrics, were repurposed into furniture and decor elements.
