Crafting Contemporary Living: Bard College Berlin’s Student Residences
Fusing History with Modernity in Berlin
In a city steeped in architectural and design history, Bard College Berlin, in collaboration with DBI Projects and Civilian, brings forth a new chapter in student living. The innovative student residences, designed by the New York-based architecture and interiors studio Civilian, pay homage to Berlin’s diverse cultural landscape, fostering an environment for student living and learning in the heart of Europe.
Architectural Symphony in Pankow
Situated in the leafy Pankow neighborhood, the former East Berlin embassy district, the twin red and gray brick buildings stand as a testament to Berlin’s architectural diversity. Hosting 39 apartments for 120 students, these residences encapsulate the city’s rich character, forming a spacious patio that acts as a communal hub. The strategic placement establishes a connection between Intelligenzberg Park and Bard College Berlin’s campus, creating a seamless blend with the surroundings.
A Design Collaboration
Civilian, working closely with the development manager of DBI Projects and local partner AVP, oversees the architecture, interiors, furniture, and landscape design. This collaborative effort ensures a holistic approach, integrating local expertise to shape every aspect of the project.
Inspired by History: Contemporary Expressionism
Drawing inspiration from the progressive housing estate of the Weimar era and the Metropolis-era masonry Expressionist architecture of the 1920s, Civilian’s design pays homage to German architect Bruno Taut. The dialogue extends to the Neo Bauhaus architecture of the 1970s surrounding the neighborhood. This architectural symphony is a nod to dense color, quality surface materials, and a multidisciplinary approach to design, emphasizing light and air.
Thoughtful Interiors for Learning and Living
The ground floor’s lounge and study areas, connected by a landscaped courtyard, serve as a social hub. The public spaces are meticulously crafted to support student learning and social exchange. Distributed across both buildings, the study lounges feature a common material palette, offering spaces for both convivial and introspective activities.
Custom Furniture and Sustainability
In line with the ethos of open social exchange, Civilian has created custom furniture inspired by 1920s utility designs. This flexible furniture, along with vintage pieces from the 70s and 80s, graces public lounge and cafe spaces. The commitment to sustainability is evident in the buildings’ design, meeting Germany’s progressive energy standards. An innovative courtyard design incorporates rainwater runoff into gardens with indigenous perennial plants.
Shaping a Community
The residences, designed with an understanding of local history, aim to enrich the living and studying experience. Thoughtful integration of historical elements, contemporary design, and sustainable practices creates an environment that reflects the ethos of Bard College Berlin—a close-knit intellectual community with a rich tapestry of history and modernity.
