The CBO Residence renovation project, undertaken by MOLD Architects, breathes new life into a historic coffee house in the heart of Serifos, Greece. Originally constructed in the 1920s, this two-story building underwent a complete transformation to become a summer residence, blending tradition with modern design.

Historical Transformation

The project involved the complete renovation and repurposing of the coffee house, which was characterized by load-bearing stonewalls. The ground floor housed the main hall and a small preparation room, with an internal staircase leading to a utility room on the first floor.

Functional Reimagining

The main focus of the renovation was to create a single open-space living area on the ground floor, while converting the auxiliary spaces into two independent bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The design aimed to fulfill all functional needs within this space, incorporating kitchen equipment, bookcases, lighting installations, stairs, and relaxation areas.

Structural Innovation

To achieve a light and modern aesthetic, a three-dimensional grid of steel bars was introduced, spanning the entire height of the space. This grid, in contrast to the heavy stone shell of the building, created a more sustainable and visually appealing environment.
