Historical Significance

Dating from various eras, the dozen or so buildings within the complex include the old church, remnants of the old convent, and structures originally built for industrial purposes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Despite the passage of time, key features such as the cloister, chapter room, refectory, staircase, and library have survived and have been utilized as an Events Centre for several years.

Project Scope

The renovation project, commissioned by Beato Lux, encompassed the remodeling of the Events Centre and the refurbishment of remaining buildings for new purposes. Additionally, the construction of above-ground and underground car parks, along with outdoor spaces, was undertaken. Initiated in 2018, the project is slated for completion in 2024, with the Events Centre renovation completed in March 2022.

Technical and Creative Elements

The refurbishment involved technical upgrades such as telecommunications, energy, and security systems, alongside creative endeavors like designing new courtyards, sanitary facilities, and unique elements such as emergency exit walkways for the library. The aim was to seamlessly integrate modern elements while respecting the architectural integrity of the existing structures.

Cloister Transformation

A significant transformation occurred in the cloister, a space frequently used for large-scale events. The outdated pyramid-shaped roof was replaced with a contemporary ceiling featuring orthogonally arranged trusses, creating a visually striking “honeycomb” effect. Skylights provided natural light and ventilation, enhancing interior comfort and sound quality.

Harmonious Integration

Throughout the renovation, efforts were made to harmonize modern functionality with historical charm. Whether concealing new technical installations or replicating old craftsmanship, the goal was to maintain the architectural and heritage value of the complex. The result is a seamless blend of tradition and innovation, honoring the past while embracing the future.

Conclusion

The renovation of Convento do Beato Event Center was a complex undertaking that required meticulous planning and execution. By incorporating modern amenities while preserving historical features, the project successfully transformed the space into a modern events center without compromising its architectural integrity. This meticulous approach reflects the dedication to preserving and celebrating Lisbon’s rich cultural heritage.
