Revitalizing Houjie Town: A Cultural and Creative Complex

In 2023, TurtleHill Architecture and Design embarked on a transformative project in Houjie Town, Dongguan City, China, known as the “Houjie Times” commercial complex. Situated within the First Industrial Zone of the Liaoxia district, the project aimed to repurpose existing old industrial buildings into a cultural and creative neighborhood, paying homage to industrial culture and urban striving spirit.

Embodying Economic Development History

The architectural complex serves as a microcosm of the contemporary history of economic development in the Pearl River Delta. Originally a factory site in the town center, it faced increasing consumer demands and trends in consumption upgrading. Recognizing the need for diverse consumption scenes, the “Houjie Times” project was born. The design approach was deeply rooted in the original building’s construction logic, preserving its industrial heritage.

Preservation and Transformation

TurtleHill Architecture and Design employed a restrained approach of addition and subtraction to the original building’s framework. Aging outer decorative layers were removed to expose the structural framework, showcasing the distinctive features of the industrial factory buildings. This strategy aimed to protect and utilize industrial architecture while preserving its era-specific memories and characteristics.

Innovative Design Strategies

To enhance the project’s overall image, scaffolding was incorporated as a featuring element of facade installation. This not only introduced a sense of innovation but also aligned with Houjie’s continuous development process. The lightweight materials and flexible construction method ensured adaptability to changing times, allowing swift responses to market demands.

Future Outlook

The first phase of the “Houjie Times” project opened in October 2023, with plans for additional venues to debut gradually. These venues will accommodate diverse business formats and consumer scenes, contributing to the creation of a comprehensive, vibrant, and sustainable neighborhood. As Houjie continues to evolve, the “Houjie Times” complex stands as a testament to adaptive reuse and forward-thinking urban design.
