Honoring Tradition Hamat House Extension
Introduction
Nestled within the historic village of Hamat, Lebanon, stands the Hamat House extension, a testament to architectural continuity and innovation. Designed by platau, this project seamlessly blends traditional charm with modern functionality, paying homage to the village’s rich heritage.
Embracing Tradition
Rooted in the legacy of the early 20th-century house, the Hamat House extension celebrates traditional Lebanese architecture. Constructed with local white limestone and adorned with vertical windows and stone lintels, the original structure served as the inspiration for the new addition.
A Modern Interpretation
The extension takes a bold approach, mirroring the traditional construction with an abstract white cube. Clad in the same white stone as the original house but featuring vertical stone pieces, the cube exudes a contemporary aesthetic while maintaining a harmonious connection to its heritage.
Harmonizing Elements
Strategically positioned glass openings punctuate the cube’s surface, allowing natural light to filter through. This deliberate design choice creates a dynamic interplay between light and shadow, further enhancing the architectural composition.
Enhancing Connectivity
The programmatic layout of the extension includes a kitchen, master bedroom, and connecting circulation spaces. A glazed vertical circulation core serves as a bridge between old and new, flooding the interior with light and forging a renewed connection to the surrounding landscape.
Minimal Intervention
Respecting the existing garden landscape, the intervention was kept minimal, preserving the lush foliage of fruit and olive trees. The reimagined agricultural terrace now serves as a tranquil pool area, seamlessly integrating with the natural surroundings.
Dialogue of Design
By juxtaposing the abstract form of the new extension against the traditional structure, a compelling dialogue emerges. The playful yet respectful interaction between old and new underscores the evolving possibilities of contemporary construction within a historic context.
Conclusion
The Hamat House extension stands as a testament to the enduring allure of traditional architecture fused with contemporary design sensibilities. Through meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful integration, platau has crafted a space that not only honors the past but also embraces the future of architectural innovation.
