Unveiling History

Situated in the heart of Minato, Japan, the Housekeeper’s House stands as a testament to bygone eras and enduring traditions. Originally constructed half a century ago, the aging wooden structure had fallen into disuse, its once-grand features succumbing to the passage of time. Led by architect Ryo Kamamatsu of note architects, the renovation project sought to breathe new life into this relic of the past while honoring its rich heritage.

Blending Old with New

In a delicate dance between tradition and modernity, the renovation project endeavored to preserve the essence of the original design while infusing it with contemporary sensibilities. Embracing the enduring charm of traditional Japanese architecture, the project incorporated new materials and design elements to rejuvenate the space for modern living. From lighting fixtures to spatial composition, every detail was meticulously crafted to strike a harmonious balance between past and present.

Maximizing Space and Light

Central to the renovation was the transformation of enclosed, dimly lit spaces into open, luminous interiors that fostered connectivity and interaction. Walls and ceilings were removed in common areas to create seamless transitions between rooms, inviting natural light to permeate throughout the house. The once-dark kitchen was revitalized into a vibrant communal space, echoing the spirit of traditional Japanese Doma with its welcoming ambiance and fluidity of movement.

Celebrating Architectural Heritage

The removal of the second-floor ceiling unveiled a striking roof frame, a testament to the structural ingenuity of the past. Rather than conceal this treasure, the architects chose to celebrate it, allowing the roof frame to stand as a prominent feature, seamlessly integrated into the modern aesthetic of the renovated space.

Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future

Throughout the renovation process, a deep reverence for the past guided every decision, from the choice of materials to the preservation of historical artifacts. Tatami mats, symbolic of traditional Japanese living, were replaced with Rawan plywood, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary comfort. Sliding doors, a nod to centuries-old architectural practices, were retained to offer flexibility and adaptability to changing needs.
