Design Challenges and Solutions

Early investigations revealed inherent limitations in the existing house and site, primarily concerning solar orientation. Recognizing the need for a better-suited space, the clients and architects embarked on a hunt for a new site. Through meticulous planning and design discussions, the result is a light-filled and captivating residence that meets the clients’ long-term needs.

Embracing Heritage

The original house boasts a strong period character protected by a Heritage overlay. Rather than shying away from its historical charm, the architects chose to engage with and reinterpret its defining features. This approach included preserving the grand proportions of the existing interior spaces and the distinctive terracotta roof form.

Integration of Old and New

The project began with the careful reprogramming of the floor plan, aiming to maximize sunlight exposure to the rear yard. Bedrooms and utilities were retained within the original structure, while new living areas were strategically positioned to capture northern sunlight and offer views of the backyard and pool.

Sympathetic Design

Externally, the new living areas seamlessly integrate with the existing roof, folding down at the rear of the house to complement the surrounding rooflines of the heritage neighborhood. This design not only respects the original architecture but also enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the residence.
